On the occasion of the World prematurity day, researches of CareToy project are glad to announce the end of the pilot phase of the clinical trial. The CareToy project, funded by European Committee, is devoted to early intervention in preterm infants based on a biomechatronic platform: a modular smart baby gym with sensorized toys.
The first clinical and technical results were presented in Pontedera (Italy) last November 7 during an important international workshop dedicated to the new frontiers of biomechatronic techniques for the early diagnosis and intervention of the psychomotor development.
The CareToy project is now in the most crucial phase, the clinical trial. Six systems are currently working in parallel, three in Italy and three in Denmark. The CareToy approach is perfectly in line with all the initiatives related to the care of preterm infants. Using modern ICT technologies (Information Communication Technology) the CareToy Consortium developed a platform that allows to promote the brain development of the infants.
First results are very interesting and promising: 20 infants have been tested at their home during last months for the first pilot phase of the project. We are confident that once completed the randomized study (that is now on going) we could demonstrate how an enriched environment improves the prognosis of at risk infants. CareToy allows to provide stimuli in an appropriate and suitable way not only in the clinical centres but, through playing activities, it allows families to continue the stimulation of the infant at home while the clinical staff can remotely customize the most suitable activities for his development and his specific needs.The CareToy project, coordinated by the BioRobotics Institute of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (Pisa), is the product of an international collaboration between Universities and firms. It involves 6 partners from 4 European countries: IRCCS Fondazione Stella Maris (Calambrone, Pisa), the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Hamburg (Germany), the "Helen Elsass" (Denmark), and the Italian companies STMicroelectronics and MR&D.

Neurodevelopmental disorders affect the population of infants in percentages that cannot be considered marginal and have high impact on the final outcome with significant consequences for children, parents and society.
Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial.
The workshop will give an overview of different approaches for early diagnosis at the international level.

CareToy Project participated in ROMECUP 2013 (Rome, March 20-21). The aim of this annual event is to connect schools, universities and companies. During the three days, different activities were organized: workshops, conferences, exhibition areas and robotics competitions between schools throughout Italy.

The 4th International Cerebral Palsy Conference will be hosted by the town of Pisa, Italy, on October 10-13, 2012.
The conference will be devoted to all aspects of cerebral palsy, from early diagnosis to standards of care and to new therapeutical approaches. In addition, special lectures will be dedicated to the opportunities offered by recent advances of research in Neuroscience. Contribution for understanding and treating Cerebral Palsy from animal models, genetics, stem cells, cognitive neuroscience will be discussed. The new framework provided by ICF approach, with a special attention to the quality of life, will be also taken into account, especially in relation to transition to adulthood. -

Workshop on new multi-sensor devices for remote management of disease

AbstractNowadays sensor miniaturization and MEMS development allow acquiring a great quantity of data. Innovations at system level and at component level allow the development of new systems for remote management of diseases, treatment and rehabilitation, outside hospitals and care centres.
In particular, technological progress and new advanced data processing techniques open new perspectives for exploring new applications with infants and children. Through artificial sensors and advanced signal processing human sensing and diagnostic capabilities can be extended. Indiscernible or unstructured information about the child’s interaction with the environment can be translated to a form that clinicians can immediately understand and interpret. This requires new methods for multisensory fusion, integration, action recognition and interpretation as well as extrapolation of results.Neurodevelopmental engineering is a new interdisciplinary research area at the intersection of developmental neuroscience and biomedical engineering, mainly concerned with quantitative analysis and modelling of human behaviour during neural development.
Main application fields of Neurodevelopmental Engineering are: new clinical protocols and standards for early diagnosis, functional evaluation and therapeutic treatments of neuro-developmental disorders and new generations of educational, interactive multi-sensor toys which can provide adequate stimuli and guidance for supporting the physiological neurodevelopment process.
The workshop aims at showing some results in this field and also at giving an updated view of the techniques for sensory integration that could be used for personal health systems.
